This is the fourth article by The Atriam on AI (artificial intelligence). The AI landscape is evolving rapidly. This week, we focus on Perplexity AI.
Perplexity AI is a conversational type search tool. It gives users summarised / concise responses to prompts / questions. In many ways, it is a competitor to Google. And this, for as long as it is going to last, is a good thing.
Perplexity AI burst unto the market in December 2022. This was soon after the unexpected launch of ChatGPT on 30 November 2022. Unexpected, as half the board of directors of OpenAI (the owner of ChatGPT) did not know that it was launching. Enough of the boardroom politics of OpenAI for now.
When responding to user prompts / questions, Perplexity taps into the LLLMs (large language models) of ChatGPT 4, Claude 3, and Mistral etc. in its processes. It has its own bots trawling the web, but also peaks at Google feeds in its analysis.
Unlike Google, Perplexity has both a free tear and paid-for version. The latter is called Perplexity Pro. In this regard, Perplexity is more like Gemini. The latter is Google’s AI powered LLM).
What makes Perplexity AI so useful and unique, is its direct and crisp answers to questions / responses. It is not like Google with its endless list of pages and links to trawl through. We do not often have the time to trawl through links on end. In this regard, Perplexity is a real time-saver.
In certain instances, people would like detailed multiple links and answers for their prompts / answers. However, more often than not, this is not what users are looking for.
. Thus, if you want a quick direct, not a widely researched response, Perplexity AI is, to a large extent, the go to solution.
