This is the third article by The Atriam on AI (artificial intelligence). In this instalment, we will solely focus on the big OpenAI announcement of last week.
The free chatbots version of OpenAI was ChatGPT that operates on version 3.5. To some extent, it still does. But more about it later on.
The premium subscription (paid-for) chatbot version of OpenAI is ChatGPT+ that operated GPT-4. Some of the benefits OpenAI accorded its premium subscribers with ChatGPT+, were:
ability to interact with graphics and PDF documents;
ability to access the internet for more current data; and
access to the GPT store). This was one of the biggest draw cards for ChatGPT+.
On 13 May 2024, OpenAI made 4 significant announcements. These include:
1. It unvailled it new flagship product ChatGPT-4.o.
It now gives free users access to their flagship product ChatGPT 4.o, but with restrictions (. Free users can now use the browsing features (; use the data analysis feature; and memory: all which version 3.5 did not have. For example, free users can now experience GPT-4 level intelligence, get responses from the web via ChatGPT Browse with Bing, analyze data, chat about photos and documents, use GPTs, and access the GPT Store.
2. Added (will be roled out in weeks) a new and improved Voice Mode, coupled with GPT-4.o’s new video and audio capabilities. Unlike the previous Voice Mode, users will now experience more natural conversations. One can interrupt the voice assistant and have the assistant speak with various voices and even sing.
This could be useful if one wants assistance with what one is viewing. For example, if one wants to know the name of a building one might have encountered. It can even translate, in audio format, a live conversation.
3. Upload screenshots, photos, and documents It enables users to upload images and documents, in addition to text, to get AI insights on the information they need.
4. Access to the GPT store.
One of the restrictions on free users is that premium subscribers would be accorded priority access. If the ChatGPT-4.o platform becomes over-crowded at any given point, free users will be kicked off to version 3.5. For this reason, ChatGPT 3.5 and its restrictions are still relevant.
Upwards and forwards!
